The Largest Muscle in a Horse Is WHAT?

Hi Reader,

Yesterday, I learned a very cool fact...

Do you know what the largest muscle in a horse is?

The gluteus medius.

Isn't that interesting?

I mean...considering how powerful and strong these animals are, I found that fascinating.

I also discovered that in horses, the gluteus medius plays the ultimate role in extending the hip, propelling the body forward, and stabilizing the leg.

Now I'm obviously not suggesting you need the glutes of a horse...

But there's a reason I talk so much about strengthening the glutes.

This finding reinforces why it matters.

The moment I stopped focusing so much on stretching and started strengthening my glutes (both the glute medius and maximus), my body changed...

My hips felt a lot stronger and more stable.

My piriformis muscle stopped having to take over and overwork.

And the annoying flare-ups became less frequent.

Below are 3 ways to maximize glute activation to help you build stronger glutes (and glute medius):

Glute Extensions: When doing standing extensions or glute kickbacks, keep the area from your lumbar spine to your shoulder stable and minimize movement. We don’t want to use the lower back to bring the leg backward.

More lateral movement: Include MORE side-to-side exercises. This works the glute medius the most. Keeping your feet straight will help minimize piriformis compensation.

Watch for side bending: Avoid bending to the sides to help you move. This can tighten the side lower back muscles over time. Again, keep your upper body stable and still. Feet pointing forward.

How Will Strengthening The Glutes Achieve Pain Relief?

When these large hip muscles start working as they are designed to, the small hip rotators, such as the piriformis, stop overworking.

The muscles are doing their job. That means less pressure on your joints and lumbar spine.

It's never too late to start building your glute strength.

And if you've done exercises before but they haven't worked for you, it's a sign to find modifications or a low-impact program that's easy on the joints.

If you're struggling to find a glute program specific for pain relief, start here.

And guess what...The first routines are mostly focused on the gluteus medius!
